Total Water Solutions - Why Purify Water

Why purify water?

To answer this question it is important to know something about water.

Water is like a magnet. When it comes into contact with other substances, it readily absorbs them, which means that harmful substances in our environment, such as air pollution and toxic chemicals in the ground, all get drawn into our water supply. Consequently, we can end up drinking these substances.

Where water is used for other purposes it can, depending on what it contains, cause problems such as damage or corrosion to pipes and appliances.

Water quality is dictated by the occurrence of natural pollutants or additives that may result from human activities. Some of these additives may even be the result of practices to make water more drinkable, such as the addition of chlorine. Others may be accidental and result from mining or agricultural activities, leaching of surrounding soils or even airborne pollutants getting into the water supply.

However the science to analyse water problems and the technology for solving them have made rapid advances in recent times. So, whether its waste water, domestic drinking water, domestic working water, industrial or commercial water, Total Water Solutions has the answers to purify and make the best use of it.

Water comes into our homes from several different sources, each of which
has its own particular problems.

Town water

Town water originally comes from just about everywhere. Water authorities set up catchment areas that trap the water running above and through the ground. This then sits in large dams waiting to be used.

Town water is known as a sterilised water source because before it is sent from the dams to us, it is treated with chemicals so that hardly anything can stay alive in it. It is important to note that this water, while treated for potentially nasty additives, is not pure. Chlorine and some chemicals which are used in this treatment process are detrimental to health and can make water taste terrible.

Tank Water

The most common problems for tank water are sediment, parasites and bacterial contamination. You can view information on each of these different problems by clicking on  the relevant link below.

Tank water which is collected off the roof through gutters and downpipes is open to various forms of contamination; from chemical pollutants in the city, through to leaves, dirt and bird, rat and possum faeces. In some areas bats and fruit trees over roof areas can pollute tank water very quickly. There are various methods for eliminating these contaminants from the drinking water. These range from boiling the water for 10 minutes through to micro-filtration and ozonation. As rain water is naturally acidic, problems with corrosion of metal pipes and fittings can also be encountered with tank water.

Dams, Creeks and Rivers

The contamination found in tank water can also be found in these source waters. Some additional contamination from ground minerals and ground surface pollutants may also be present. These vary widely and a water analysis is required before the water is used for specific purposes. Common problems that are encountered are hardness minerals, iron and manganese, tannin, colloidal clay and bacteria.
